Lemon
Citrus fruits possess potent anti-pathogenic properties. Of them all, lemon is probably the most popular and versatile.
According to Global Trade, the countries with the highest per capita consumption of lemon and lime in 2019 were Argentina (with no less than 40 kg), Mexico (14 kg), Spain (10 kg), and Turkey (8.25 kg). The global average per capita consumption is estimated to be 2.54 kg.
Lemon juice is a key component in many recipes all over the world. Whether you are a huge fan or you use it only occasionally in vinaigrettes, sauces, desserts, drinks, or even soups, it’s best to add its freshly squeezed juice to cold or lukewarm foods and drinks, as boiling eliminates most vitamins.
Besides the tangy, fresh taste, lemon also has plenty of positive effects on health, as it can effectively reduce bad cholesterol, and improve digestion and bone health.
It also helps to fight colds, boosts the immune system, and calms throat infections, making it a strong ally against seasonal colds and flu.
In order to dilute its acidity and sour taste, you can add lemon juice to a warm tea or even in lukewarm water. Or, if you prefer a concentrated shot, mix it with honey and ginger.
Ginger
Did you know that ginger is part of the same plant family as many other anti-inflammatory spices, such as turmeric, galangal, and cardamom?
The first thing that comes to mind when you think of ginger is often a hot condiment with flowery, citrusy tones. Ginger has been used in medicine for centuries and is also appreciated for its flavor and warmth in cuisine. It is frequently used in teas, desserts such as gingerbread, and drinks, as well as in savory Asian dishes often.
It might sound surprising, but ginger is also used as a decorative plant. It is a large plant that would thrive as an indoor plant in a conservatorium or terrace. But if you live in a region with high humidity and rich soil, you can even enjoy its clusters of exotic yellow flowers in your garden.
Furthermore, ginger has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This root can improve your body’s natural defense and alleviate occasional nausea. It also offers digestive support, as many seasonal colds also come with digestive discomfort.
Honey
And not just any type of honey, but raw honey. Why? Because the processing methods can make the difference between a nutritional powerhouse and an ordinary sweetener.
Thanks to non-altering processing methods, raw honey retains its natural enzymes, vitamins, and antioxidants. A single teaspoon of good-quality honey can instantly soothe a sore throat and coughing fits, thanks to its thick, balmy consistency and the healing substances produced by bees.
However, most commercially available honey is processed through pasteurization and ultrafiltration, which can reduce its nutritional value. Additionally, it can even contain added sugars which are harmful to health.

Even though it’s a fibrous rhizome, which looks dry at first sight, ginger releases more juice than expected when grated or blended. The warm, citrusy flavor pairs well with the fresh taste of lemon and the sweetness of honey, creating an intense but balanced mix.
